Phlebotomy Training and Requirements for Louisiana

Taking a class for phlebotomy training in Louisiana is important. This is one of the few states that requires phlebotomists to be licensed and have a certification. To become certified you must take a phlebotomy class and pass the proper examinations. From there you will apply with the state to get your phlebotomy license.

Licensing Requirements for Phlebotomists

There are two primary requirements for those who wish to become a phlebotomist in Louisiana. The first is that you pass an approved phlebotomy program. The second is that you pass an approved examinations.

  1. Pass an approved program or class
  2. Pass an approved national certifying examination

Exams

Louisiana Phlebotomy Exam List
Contact List of Approved Phlebotomy Examination Providers

All phlebotomists must be licensed in the state of Louisiana. The primary requirement for obtaining your license is to pass a nationally recognized examination. The following examinations are approved to be taken:

  • American Medical Technologists
  • American Society of Clinical Pathology
  • American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians
  • International Academy of Phlebotomy Services
  • National Allied Health Test Registry-Division
  • National Center for Competency Testing
  • National Credentialing Agency
  • National Healthcareer Association
  • national Phlebotomy Association

After you pass the examination, the scores must be sent directly from one of the organizations above to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. Most of these examinations provided by national agencies require that you already have taken an approved training program and met certain requirements.

Training Programs and Classes

The state of Louisiana also requires that you have taken the proper phlebotomy training program approved by the state board. It is best to confirm with any program or school that they are approved to provide your phlebotomy class. You may also want to double check by calling or going online to the State of Louisiana’s website. After passing the approved program, you are typically able to then take the examination.

Temporary License

Students who have just finished an approved phlebotomy training program in Louisiana may apply for a temporary license until their final license is approved. To get a temporary license the applicant must have an examination date already setup. Once the exam is taken and passed, the licensee can become a permanent license. The cost of the temporary license is $40.

Application

The application for the temporary license and permanent license is a couple of pages long. They both require that you pay a $40 to get a license. The application must also have a certificate of dean/registrar filled out and sent directly to the school where you completed your training. The program will then fill out the remainder of the form and send along a transcript.  The applicant must also get a criminal background check completed. After submitting the application, you should receive a license that will allow you to perform the duties of a phlebotomist legally in the state of Louisiana.

Phlebotomy Programs in Baltimore

Future phlebotomists should consider phlebotomy training in Baltimore MD. Phlebotomists are employed in several different medical settings, including laboratories and hospitals. When working as a phlebotomist, your most essential job function will be the intravenous collection of blood from patients. You may also be required to collect other bodily specimens. In addition to collection, you will need to handle these specimens and maintain related equipment and paperwork. Maryland does not have a state law requiring a license to practice phlebotomy, but completion of these state-approved programs prepares students to pass national certification, and most medical employers will only hire those who have completed a certification program.

There are several phlebotomy certification programs in the Baltimore area, all with differing requirements and prices. These programs include:

TESST College of Technology

Phlebotomy Technician Certificate Course

map of phlebotomy training in baltimore

410.644.6400

This four-week program for phlebotomy training in Baltimore is comprised of 60 lecture hours and 20 laboratory hours. Students will learn phlebotomy through both theory and clinical practice. The program costs $970, including tuition, registration fees, textbooks, and medical uniforms and supplies. If students are awarded a passing grade, they will be given a certificate of completion. Completion of TESST’s program does not, however, guarantee eligibility to take a national certification program.

The program also includes a five hour CPR certification. Tuition costs $850, and additional costs include a $50 registration fee and $70 textbooks. This is a 48 hour program combining lecture and laboratory instruction with a venipuncture exam required for completion. Pre-requisites for program admission include proof of high school completion or GED, a negative tuberculosis test, up to date immunizations, and a physical exam report signed by a physician. The program costs $1,075, and additional costs include books and medical uniform.

Anne Arundel Community College

Phlebotomy Technician Training Course
101 College Parkway
Arnold, MD 21012
410.777.2222

Located a short drive from Baltimore, Anne Arundel Community College also offers a rolling admission program. The program for phlebotomy training in Baltimore is offered as an 8-credit course combination in the fall and spring semesters or as a single, 6-credit course in the summer term. The difference between these options is that the fall and spring programs offer a letter of recognition on completion while the summer program does not. In addition to the 112 classroom hours, students must also complete 90 clinical hours outside of the classroom at approved sites. For non-Anne Arundel County residents, the fall and spring programs cost $1,568, and the summer program costs $1,176. There is also a $25 registration fee to enroll in classes at the college. Requirements for admission to the program include completing an application, attending an information session, completing a health examination record and criminal background check, and obtaining CPR certification.
