There is a program for phlebotomy training in San Diego offered through San Diego Mesa College that allows you to become CPT1 licensed in California. The program is about 152 hours in length and is about 9.5 credits. In order to enroll in the courses necessary, you must have completed English 047A or English 048 and 049. Math 038 is also required. Those course requirements are however waived if you meet the satisfactory assessment scores of W5 or R5 and M30. The program is treated as college courses and the cost is about $246 if you are a resident of California. There is an internship portion to the course in addition to the basic and advanced phlebotomy classes. The classes for Fall 2018 require an application that must be submitted by March 2, 2018 for admissions. You must have a high school diploma, pass a drug test and complete a back ground check. A physical exam, Hepatitis B shots, and a Class C Healthcare Provider CPR Certification is also required to be completed by June 8, 2018.

There is another place to get phlebotomy training in San Diego through Mira Costa College’s Oceanside campus. This phlebotomy program costs about $2,750 for the tuition, externship and books. Additional fees for background checks, CPR course fees, immunization fees, national licensing and state application fees may add an additional $400 to the cost. The format of the class includes a 10 week classroom portion and an 80 to 120 hour externship to follow. Classes are taught Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:00PM to 8:00PM.
Students must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma. You must also take an English exam on the first day to test your mastery of the English language. Before starting the externship you must get a CPR card, provide proof of a negative TB test and a health exam.

The total classroom time adds up to about 320 hours including a 120 hour externship. Classroom meetings are generally twice a week. The one semester class is eight hours a days. The two semester class is four hours a day. Classes are currently being offered January 9, 2018 through May 31, 2018 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00AM to 4:30PM. The program costs about $600 to enroll and registration is by appointment only. This does not include state licensing, exam fees or the cost for a background check. The requirements to start the program include having a AHA BLS for the Healthcare Provider card. Students must also have immunizations up to date and get an examination by a physician. A high school diploma or equivalent is required as well. Students must now receive a passing score on a math and reading exam prior to entering the class.
